Kaldi, a goat herder, discovered the effect of coffee

Legend has it, the effect of coffee berries was first discovered by Kaldi, a goat herder, who noticed his goats became more active and energetic after eating coffee berries. The discovery was the beginning of a journey that would take this mysterious new drink across the world.

The stories about coffee began to spread

Coffee cultivation and trade began on the Arabian Peninsula. By the 15th century, coffee was being grown in the Yemeni district of Arabia. Public coffee houses, called qahveh, began to appear in cities and the popularity of coffee was such that people would frequent the coffee houses for all kinds of social activity.

Coffee brings people together

The guests would not only drink coffee and engage in conversation, but they also listened to music, watched performers, played chess and kept current on the news. Coffee houses quickly became such an important center for the exchange of information that they were often referred to as ‘Schools of the Wise.’

People try all sorts of coffee

Centuries, countless recipes and methods of preparation later, in the heart of Arabia, modern day Abu Dhabi, a team of ambitious baristas created a recipe for an iced coffee. With the temperature reaching 45 degrees it couldn’t have come a minute sooner. They asked their frequent guests to taste the new creation and tell them whether they too found it to be as delicious and invigorating as the baristas did.

There is one exceptional new coffee drink

The new drink became an instant success and had to be included in the menu as soon as possible. Only one problem remained, it had no name. Once again, the baristas turned to the coffee house guests. One of the most loyal patrons suggested why don’t you name it after my lovely daughter Gaya.

And so, they did and a new chapter in coffee history begun. Soon Gaya iced coffee became the most popular drink on the menu. Its popularity presented a new opportunity and challenge, make Gaya available anytime, anywhere.
